How to Build a TCG Store, Part 6: The Sign Is Up - Meet Common Lands

Since we got the keys to the store three weeks ago, things have been moving fast. A lot of time has gone into researching and ordering ("yes, we did just try to purchase 3 TVs. please take the hold off.”). And a lot of planning that doesn't look like much yet (though the painter's tape on the floor is doing a lot of heavy lifting).

But yesterday, something big and very real happened.

The sign is up.

Check the font and torch logo - fully custom. Channel letters, backlit, and in the same earthy yellow-gold used on our site. Huge thanks to Sigma Sign Co. for bringing it to life.

And with the sign going up, the store name is official: Common Lands.

So why Common Lands?

One of the founders, Sean, has been gaming and finding community in games since he was a kid. The first game that really pulled him in was EverQuest. In EverQuest, the Commonlands was a central zone - a place where players passed through, traded, and naturally ran into each other. It became a gathering point.

And, for those who remember it, there was always a shared center - a place people gravitated toward. The hearth. That imagery stuck, and it's something we've carried into the identity of the store, even down to the torch in the "O" of Common.

We want this store to feel the same way. Not just a place to stop in and buy cards, but a place people come to spend time, play, and connect. A true third space.

The name also carries over into TCG language. "Lands" are the foundation of how games like Magic: The Gathering function. The resource that makes everything else possible. And common isn't about being low-value - it's about being accessible, something everyone interacts with. Put together, Common Lands felt like the right way to describe what we're building.

You'll start to see "Common Lands" show up in more places soon, including online, as we transition into the new name.

For now, we're taking a moment to enjoy the view, with a cold drink from the (recently installed) fridge. Looking forward to sharing the space with you in person soon. Stay posted.
